Karen Boren Gerstenberger is a painter and mixed media artist who earned a bachelor's degree in Fine Art from Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, after spending her freshman and sophomore years in study at Pomona College in Claremont, California.
After suffering from "artist's block" for years, Karen took a workshop from intuitive painter Flora Bowley and the block dissolved.
Though she paints primarily with acrylic on canvas and ink on paper, Karen loves to experiment with other materials and substrates. She works in her home studio on the shores of Puget Sound, where she lives with her husband, Gregg. They are the parents of David & Katie.
Karen is the author of a memoir, "Because of Katie," the story of her family's journey through the world of pediatric cancer care with her daughter, Katie. After Katie's death at the age of 12 in 2007 from adrenocortical carcinoma, Karen became an advocate for cancer research and family-centered care. She spent years raising awareness and hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity through her writing and public speaking. Her book is available in paperback and Kindle format on Amazon.com.
Karen is a graduate of the National Speakers Association's Northwest Academy, as well as the creator of "Word Soup," a writer's workshop for beginners and blocked writers, which she has taught at local public libraries.
Karen had the privilege of studying art in England during a term of her college career. Working en plein air was an important part of the program.
